Cook County tax bills are due Thursday; rates cross 7%
Property taxes: Cook County's second-installment bills for tax year 2025 are due Thursday, October 1. The bills arrived about two months late because of the county's system overhaul. If you're selling, expect the title company to want this installment paid or collected at closing. It also affects the tax proration on your closing statement.
Mortgage rates: Freddie Mac's 30-year average rose to 7.03% last week, up from 6.95% the week before and 6.30% a year ago. It's the first reading at or above 7% in over a year. If you're under contract and haven't locked your rate, talk with your lender this week. Your contract's financing deadline still applies.
This week's tip: You can view and pay your bill at cookcountytreasurer.com. Keep the receipt; your attorney will ask for it at closing.
